The May 2026 Floods:
A Warning Western Cape
Landowners Cannot Ignore

The rain that fell across the Western Cape in May 2026 was not extraordinary by historical standards. What was extraordinary was the damage it caused. Roads washed away, properties flooded, rivers jumped their banks in places they had not reached in living memory. The storms themselves were not the whole story. The land beneath them was.

What Made This Worse Than It Should Have Been

Across the Western Cape, decades of unchecked invasive alien plant growth have transformed the hydrology of river catchments. Species like Port Jackson, black wattle, and blue gum do not behave like indigenous fynbos or renosterveld. They consume vastly more water, they do not allow the slow infiltration that native vegetation enables, and when rivers flood, their root systems and debris create blockages that amplify the damage downstream.

The result is a kind of compounding disaster. Catchments that would once have absorbed heavy rain now shed it rapidly into rivers that are already choked. When the water finally breaks free, it carries with it a decade's worth of accumulated biomass — branches, root mats, accumulated silt — and dumps it on whatever lies downstream.

This is not a theory. It is what happened in valley after valley across the Boland and the Cape Winelands in May 2026.

This Is a Landowner Problem, Not Just a Government Problem

Working for Water and the various provincial clearing programmes do important work. But they cannot keep pace with the rate of regrowth and new invasion across millions of hectares of privately held land. The reality is that the health of the Western Cape's river systems depends in large part on what private landowners choose to do — or not do — on their own properties.

Riparian zones are particularly critical. The strip of land immediately adjacent to a river performs essential functions: it filters runoff, stabilises banks, slows floodwater, and provides habitat for an enormous range of species. When that zone is dominated by invasive aliens, none of those functions work properly. The river becomes a liability instead of an asset.

The health of the Western Cape's river systems depends in large part on what private landowners choose to do — or not do — on their own properties.

What We Are Doing at Waterval

At Waterval Country Lodge in Tulbagh, we have been engaged in systematic riparian restoration for several years. Our property sits alongside the Waterval River, and we take our responsibility to that watercourse seriously. That means ongoing clearing of invasive species, replanting with indigenous riparian vegetation, and maintaining a buffer zone that allows the river to function as it should.

The May 2026 floods put that work to the test. We saw the difference between the sections of river we had restored and those that had not yet received attention. The restored sections held. The scouring, the bank collapse, the debris accumulation — these were concentrated in the areas where the work had not yet been done. It was a sobering demonstration of what is at stake.

We do not share this to congratulate ourselves. We share it because we think it matters that more landowners understand the practical, measurable difference that restoration work makes — not just for the environment in the abstract, but for the actual behaviour of rivers during flood events.

Starting Where You Are

If you own land in the Western Cape with a river or stream running through it, the most important thing you can do right now is assess the state of your riparian zone. Are invasive aliens dominant? Is the bank stable? Is there indigenous vegetation providing structural protection?

You do not need to fix everything at once. A systematic clearing programme, starting at the water's edge and working outward, followed by replanting with species suited to your specific conditions, will produce results within a few seasons. The key is to start, to maintain, and to not allow cleared areas to reinvade.

We are happy to share what we have learned from our own restoration work. The floods of May 2026 were a warning. The next event is coming. The question is whether we use the time between now and then wisely.
