Getting Here & General

How far is Waterval from Cape Town?

Approximately one hour from Cape Town CBD, depending on traffic. Take the N1 toward Paarl, then the R44 through Wolseley to Tulbagh. The lodge is on the Old Tulbagh Road, clearly signposted from the town. Free parking on-site.

Can we do a site visit before booking?

Yes — and we encourage it. Contact us with your preferred dates and we'll arrange a walkthrough with our events coordinator. Site visits are free and completely obligation-free.

Is there Wi-Fi at the venue?

Yes. High-speed fibre Wi-Fi is available throughout the conference facilities and accommodation. Dedicated bandwidth for larger events is available on request.

Is Waterval pet friendly?

Pets are welcome by prior arrangement. As we border an active fynbos nature reserve, specific rules apply to ensure the safety of both pets and wildlife. Please ask us about the current pet policy when making your enquiry.

What are the best months to visit Tulbagh?

The valley is beautiful year-round. Spring (August–October) brings wildflowers and fresh greens. Summer (November–February) is warm and long. Autumn (March–May) is harvest season with golden light. Winter (June–August) brings occasional mountain snow and the famous Christmas in Winter festival in June/July — genuinely magical.

What is your cancellation policy?

Our policy varies depending on the type of event and lead time. Full details are included in your booking proposal. As a general guide: a deposit holds your date, with the balance due closer to the event. Please ask us for specifics when you enquire.

Conferences

What is the maximum conference capacity?

Our main conference room seats up to 60 delegates boardroom style or 80 theatre style. We also have breakaway rooms and covered outdoor decks for smaller syndicate groups.

What AV and technology is available?

Data projector, 4K screen, wireless presentation, surround sound, high-speed fibre Wi-Fi, HDMI and wireless casting. Whiteboard and flip charts included in all packages.

Do you offer residential/overnight conference packages?

Yes. Our 24hr residential package includes the full day conference, overnight accommodation, welcome dinner, full breakfast and a morning session the following day. It's our most popular format for teams wanting to go deeper.

How far in advance should I book a conference?

We recommend 4 to 8 weeks where possible, though we can often accommodate shorter lead times. For specific peak dates, earlier is better. Contact us with your preferred date and we'll confirm availability immediately.

Can we combine a conference with team building activities?

Absolutely — and it's one of the most popular combinations. A morning of structured conference sessions followed by an afternoon team building activity is a highly effective format. We can package both together with a single proposal.

Team Building

What team building activities do you offer?

Facilitated wilderness navigation trails, conservation work days alongside our land team, waterfall hikes with structured reflection, cooking challenges, campfire storytelling evenings and fully custom programmes designed around your team's specific goals. All activities are professionally facilitated and debriefed.

What group sizes do you cater for?

Groups of 10 to 80 delegates. For larger groups, contact us to discuss configuration.

Can you deliver team building in Cape Town or elsewhere?

Yes. Our facilitators deliver team building programmes across the Western Cape — Cape Town CBD, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West and surrounds. We bring the activities, facilitation and energy. You provide the space. Contact us for a quote.

Do you provide professional facilitators?

Yes. All team building programmes are delivered by our own experienced facilitators. We don't subcontract facilitation — your team works with people who know the land, know the activities and know how to debrief effectively.

Can team building be tailored to our company's specific goals?

That's exactly how we work. Tell us your team's current challenges — whether it's rebuilding trust after change, onboarding new members, developing leadership or celebrating a year of hard work — and we'll design around that. Generic activities are a waste of everyone's time.

Weddings

What wedding packages do you offer?

Two main options: the Garden Venue (30–120 guests, ceremony and reception in our dedicated garden space) and Full Venue Hire (up to 200 guests, exclusive use of the entire property including accommodation). Both can be customised extensively.

Can we bring external caterers?

No — all catering is done by our in-house kitchen team. This is a deliberate choice: we guarantee the food quality and service because we control it entirely. Menus are customised per wedding. Halaal, vegetarian and other dietary requirements are fully accommodated.

Is accommodation included in wedding packages?

Accommodation for the wedding party is included in Full Venue Hire. For Garden Venue bookings, accommodation can be added. We have Bush Camp glamping tents, the Guinea Fowl Lodge and garden rooms — enough for the couple and key members of the wedding party to stay the night.

Do you have a list of preferred suppliers?

Yes — we work with a trusted network of florists, photographers, musicians and celebrants in the Tulbagh and Cape Winelands area. We're happy to share recommendations, but you're welcome to bring your own suppliers.

How far in advance should we book?

9 to 12 months for peak season (September to April). Winter and weekday weddings have more availability and can often be booked with shorter lead times. A 25% deposit holds your date.

School & Student Camps

What grades do you cater for?

Grade 4 through Grade 12. Programmes are designed for specific age groups and learning outcomes. University and college student groups are also welcome — contact us to discuss appropriate programmes.

Are your programmes CAPS curriculum-aligned?

Yes. Our environmental education and outdoor learning programmes can be aligned to CAPS outcomes for Life Sciences, Geography and Life Orientation. When you enquire, tell us your grade and specific curriculum goals and we'll design accordingly.

What supervision is provided?

All activities are supervised by our experienced facilitators. For overnight camps, 24-hour educator supervision is part of the programme — both our staff and accompanying educators are present throughout. Full educator support and a dedicated educator area are included in all packages.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

We cater for groups from 20 to 120 learners. Larger groups can be discussed — contact us with your numbers and we'll advise on the best format.

Are overnight camps available?

Yes. Our overnight residential camps cover 1 to 3 nights and include all meals, accommodation, facilitated activities, an evening campfire programme and a morning session on departure day. It's the most transformative format and consistently our most popular option.

Accommodation

Can I book a private stay at Waterval?

Yes. Private stays are available on dates when the venue is not booked for events. Availability is limited by the conference calendar, which keeps numbers low and the experience genuinely quiet. Contact us with your preferred dates and we'll confirm availability within 24 hours.

What accommodation options are available?

Bush Camp glamping tents (luxury canvas tents with private decks and en-suite facilities, set in the fynbos), the Guinea Fowl Lodge (self-contained lodge sleeping larger groups or families, with full kitchen), and Garden Rooms (en-suite rooms opening directly onto the lodge gardens).

Is breakfast included?

Breakfast is available on request and can be arranged when you book. Most accommodation units have self-catering facilities for other meals. Dinner is by prior arrangement only.

Is there a minimum stay requirement?

One night minimum on weekdays. Two nights minimum on weekends and public holidays.

Catering & Dietary

Do you offer halaal catering?

Yes. Halaal catering is available on request for all events and private stays. Please mention this when you make your enquiry so we can plan accordingly.

How are dietary requirements handled?

All dietary requirements are accommodated — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, nut allergies and other needs. We ask that you provide a dietary list when you confirm your booking so our kitchen team can prepare properly.

Can we use an external caterer?

No. All food at Waterval is prepared by our in-house kitchen team. This applies to all events and stays. The reason is quality control — we have full accountability for what comes out of our kitchen, which means we can genuinely stand behind it.
